Professional Experience
Akiima serves as a consultant and the Founder of Restorative Park Engagement (RPE), where
she specializes in designing and implementing trauma-informed, community-centered strategies
that connect people to parks and natural spaces as a pathway to improved well-being. With over
two decades of experience, Akiima works at the intersection of environmental engagement,
public health, and community development, helping agencies and organizations better serve
economically stressed communities through meaningful outdoor experiences.
As the Founder of Friends of Anacostia Park, Akiima has led the development of a nationally
recognized model for community engagement in partnership with the National Park Service. Her
work focuses on building trust with park users, creating culturally relevant programming, and
strengthening connections between parks and the surrounding community. She has successfully
built and managed a broad network of partners across the social service, justice, health,
education, and environmental sectors.
Akiima’s expertise includes community engagement, needs assessment, program design,
partnership development, and workforce development. She has contributed to large-scale park
and recreation master planning efforts, supporting consulting teams in engaging diverse
stakeholders, gathering community input, and shaping equitable strategies for long-term park
investment and service delivery.
Her professional foundation includes leadership roles in environmental education and civic
ecology, where she developed national programming, facilitated trainings, and advanced
inclusive practices in the field. Akiima brings a relationship-driven, service-oriented approach to
her work, helping agencies and communities reimagine parks as spaces for healing, connection,
and opportunity.
